What we mean by trauma and violence informed care
Trauma- and violence-informed care (TVIC) is a framework that can reduce barriers to accessing health and social services and promote more caring, compassionate, person-centered and non-judgmental care.
The first step is to recognize how common trauma is, and to understand that every patient may have experienced serious trauma. We don't necessarily need to question people about their experiences; rather, we should just assume that they may have this history, and act accordingly.
Adverse Childhood experiences (ACE's) are the cause of many of society's most pressing health problems. These problems contribute to the astronomical and consistently rising costs of health care, as well as tremendous social costs in morbidity, mortality, and quality of life.
